Unveiling 'Beneath the Surface': The Story Behind the Painting
As an artist working from my home studio in the countryside of Wiltshire, I’m continually inspired by the natural world that surrounds me. My work explores the space between abstraction and realism, and I often use colour and texture to raise environmental awareness and invite conversations around mental health. 'Beneath the Surface' is one of the first pieces in my 'Nurture Nature' series, and it embodies these themes.
When I began this painting, I wanted to capture the feeling of peering beneath the surface of a tranquil stream—the way light filters through water, the tangle of roots and stones below, and the quiet life that thrives unseen. I layered glazes of deep blues and greens with luminous gold and copper highlights, allowing the paint to flow organically across the canvas. The composition reveals glimpses of familiar forms while leaving much open to interpretation, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own experiences and emotions.
Throughout the process I worked intuitively, responding to the marks and colours as they appeared. Painting in this way is both meditative and challenging; it asks me to trust in the moment and to listen to what the work needs. My hope is that 'Beneath the Surface' invites you to slow down, look closely, and discover your own narrative within its layers. Whether you see it as an underwater landscape, a dreamscape or an abstract exploration of emotion, the piece is meant to be a mirror—reflecting our collective connection to nature and to ourselves.
You can bring this piece into your own space as a high‑quality fine art print. Each print is produced on heavy 200 gsm gloss paper, signed by me and packaged with care in my studio. I also offer a limited number of canvases and accept commissions if you’re interested in a unique piece inspired by this work.
